Rules for New Student Drivers
Rules for New Student Drivers
Spring is upon us and many new student drivers will be on the road. At Curry’s, we love to see the excitement on a teenager’s face when he or she gets the freedom of driving; however, that freedom comes at a cost—the responsibility of obeying the rules of the road and keeping yourself and those around you safe.
Rule #1: Follow the Tiers of TADRA
Step 1 – Learner’s Permit (Class CP): Granted to applicants at least 15 years old who pass a knowledge test on road rules and signs. Drivers must be accompanied by an individual at least 21 years old with a valid Class C license seated in the front passenger seat.
Step 2 – Intermediate Provisional License (Class D): Granted to 16 or 17-year-olds who have held a Learner’s Permit for 12 months and one day with no major violations and a successful road skills test.
Step 3 – Full License (Class C): Granted to drivers 18 years or older with no major convictions in the last 12 months.
Rule #2: Attendance Requirements
Anyone younger than 18 must present proof of school enrollment or completion to obtain a permit or license. Valid documents include:
- Certificate of Attendance (DS-1)
- High School Diploma or GED
- Special Diploma or Certificate of Completion
- Official College/Vocational transcript (dated within 30 days)
- Declaration of Intent for Home Schoolers
