Summer Safety: Look Before You Lock!
In the midst of this summer heat, we can sometimes get preoccupied and forget that we have precious cargo in our backseat—whether that be a child or a pet. It’s important to “Look Before You Lock”! Did you know that heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash-related fatalities for children 14 and younger?
Key Tips to Remember:
- Always check the back seats of your vehicle before you lock it and walk away.
- Keep a stuffed animal in your child’s car seat when empty; move it to the front seat as a visual reminder when your child is in the back.
- If your routine changes or someone else is driving, always call to confirm the child arrived safely.
What to Do if You See a Child in a Hot Car:
Don’t wait more than a few minutes for the driver to return. If the child is not responsive or is in distress, immediately:
- Call 911.
- Get the child out of the car.
- Spray the child with cool water (not an ice bath).
If the child is responsive:
- Stay with the child until help arrives.
- Have someone search for the driver or ask the facility to page them.
As a family-run business, we care about our community. Let’s rally together to stay vigilant. Stay cool and have a great summer!
